After months of fans begging for an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film, a spinoff is finally reportedly in the works, possibly even with a director in talks.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot) will lead the project. Sources also say that the film is “at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script.” THR stated, “If a deal makes, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass.”
Sadly, no news if Ewan MgGregor will reprise his role as the Jedi Master.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff will be part of the Anthology series Lucasfilms and Disney first started with Rogue One. A Han Solo movie is in the final stages of pre-production, under new director Ron Howard. Afterwards, a Bobba Fett standalone film will be in the works.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fan favorite Star Wars character, from both the original trilogy and the prequels. First portrayed in the original trilogy by Alecc Guinness, he was known as Ben Kenobi and trained a young Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force in A New Hope. Even though the prequels were received with backlash, fans and critics agreed that Ewan MgGregor was a big highlight as young Obi-Wan Kenobi in all three films. First being a padawan for Qui Gon (Liam Neeson) before his tragic death, he then faced the challenge of being the master of young Anakin Skywalker.
MgGregor has stated that he is open to playing the character again if Lucasfilms so desires. He did have a brief voice appearance in The Force Awakens, when Rey finds Luke’s saber on Takodana, and hears “These are your first steps.”
